Panchakarma in Ayurveda means the five fold purification therapy performed for correcting the vitiated doshas (elements) in the body. “Pancha” means five and “karma” means treatment. The five treatments are as follows:

  • Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) – Inducing vomiting by giving medicines orally
  • Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) – Stimulating bowel movements for expulsion of vitiated elements through the anus
  • Nasyam – Instilling medicines through the nostrils
  • Niruhavasthi – Decoction enema through the anus
  • Snehavasthi – Oil enema through the anus

The physician decides whether the person is apt to perform the detoxification process and selects the one for his/her condition. It is performed in three stages:

  • Purvakarma – preparatory procedures before the main karma
  • Pradhanakarma – main treatment which is designed as per each individual’s needs
  • Paschatkarma – post treatment care includes the diet regimen and the other do’s and don’ts.
