Treatment for Back Pain
Back pain (Pain in the back region) may be acute, sub-acute, or chronic depending on the duration. The pain may be dull, shooting or piercing type, or a burning sensation. It may originate from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the vertebral column. Internal structures such as the gallbladder and pancreas may also cause referred pain in the back. Most back aches are due to inflammation in the muscles, especially in the acute phase. Common conditions causing back pain include:
- Muscle or ligament strain
- Bulging or ruptured discs (Sciatica)
- Skeletal irregularities like Scoliosis
The treatment plan for backache depends on the cause. As said above the pain may be a referred type in conditions like pelvic infection where the infection has to be treated. So proper diagnosis is essential in treating the pain. Ayurveda names the condition ‘Kateegraha’ which may be an independent disease or a symptom of another disease.
The common causes of chronic pain include disc hernia, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis etc where the ayurvedic treatment might last for a few weeks. It is seen in cases of degeneration that the condition reversed by proper ayurvedic treatment. The physician decides the protocol to be followed after evaluation of the patient’s condition.
